Where There's Smoke: Best-selling author Jodi Picoult is a masterful storyteller, who "writes with a fine touch, a sharp eye for detail, and a firm grasp of the delicacy and complexity of human relationships" (The Boston Globe). Now, in this original short story, Picoult introduces Serenity Jones, one of the fascinating characters from her eagerly awaited new novel, Leaving Time. Even as a child, Serenity Jones knew she possessed unusual psychic gifts. Now, decades later, she’s an acclaimed medium and host of her own widely viewed TV show, where she delivers messages to the living from loved ones who have passed. Lately, though, her efforts to boost ratings and garner fame have compromised her clairvoyant instincts. When Serenity books a young war widow to appear as a guest, the episode quickly unravels, stirring up a troubling controversy. And as she tries to undo the damage - to both her reputation and her show - Serenity finds that pride comes at a high price. Larger than Life: A gripping and beautifully written novella. Set in the wilds of Africa, Larger than Life introduces Alice, the unforgettable character at the center of Picoult's anticipated new novel, Leaving Time. A researcher studying memory in elephants, Alice is fascinated by the bonds between mother and calf - the mother’s powerful protective instincts and her newborn’s unwavering loyalty. Living on a game reserve in Botswana, Alice is able to view the animals in their natural habitat - while following an important rule: She must only observe and never interfere. Then she finds an orphaned young elephant in the bush and cannot bear to leave the helpless baby behind. Thinking back on her own childhood, and on her shifting relationship with her mother, Alice risks her career to care for the calf. Yet what she comes to understand is the depth of a parent’s love. 1. Best-selling author Michael Morpurgo turns his storytelling skills to the drama and tragedy of the Spanish Civil War. Toro, Toro is the story of a young boy growing up in Andalucia, Spain, on a farm rearing bulls for the bull ring. Antonito hand rears a little black calf, and they become firm friends, but the boy doesn't yet understand the fate of the black bulls: the corrida and death. Later, when he learns of the horrors of the bull fight, he frees Paco, the black bull, and rides with him into the hills. There they witness the bombing of their village (it's the year 1936, and the Spanish Civil War has started) and Antonito cannot go back - his family and the farm are destroyed, and Paco has run off, wild with fright. He decides to stay in the hills, where he meets up with the Resistance fighters. During the War, Antonito hears stories round the campfire of the wonderful black bull, who becomes a symbol of freedom for them all. Could this really be Paco? But no-one has ever seen him. After the war, when Antonito is working as a muleteer in the mountains, he falls asleep and dreams of Paco. In the morning, he wakes to see hoof prints on the ground beside him…. A delightful story, full of nostalgia and drama in the author's own inimitable style. Illustrated by Michael Foreman. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Christopher Barlow. Bohemian London , Hörbuch, Digital, 1, 415min

London has always been home to outsiders. To people who won't or can't abide by the conventions of respectable society. For close to two centuries these misfit individualists have had a name. They have been called Bohemians. This book is an entertaining, anecdotal history of Bohemian London. A guide to its more colourful inhabitants. Rossetti and Swinburne, defying the morality of high Victorian England. Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley in the decadent 1890s. The Bloomsburyites and the Bright Young Things. Dylan Thomas, boozing in the Blitz, and Francis Bacon and his cronies, wasting time and getting wasted in 1950s Soho. It's also a guide to the places where Bohemia has flourished. The legendary Cafe Royal, a home away from home to artists and writers for nearly a century. The Cave of the Golden Calf, a First World War nightclub run by the Swedish playwright August Strindberg's widow. The Colony Room, the infamous drinking den presided over by the gloriously foul-mouthed Muriel Belcher, and the Gargoyle Club in Dean Street, where the artistic avant-garde mixed with upper-crust eccentrics. The pubs of Fitzrovia where the painters Augustus John and Nina Hamnett rubbed shoulders with the occultist Aleister Crowley and where the short-story writer Julian Maclaren-Ross, wearing mirror sunglasses and clutching a silver-topped Malacca cane, held court for his acolytes and admirers. The story of Bohemian London is one of drink and drugs, sex and death, excess and indulgence. It's also a story of achievement and success. Some of the finest art and literature of the last two centuries has emerged from Bohemia. Nick Rennison's book provides a lively and enjoyable portrait of the world in which Bohemian Londoners once lived. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Fraser Wilson. During the Second World War I could not get out of school fast enough to begin to work and earn money and embarked on a very checkered career in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, involving a sign shop, ice delivery and twenty-seven years managing a beer store. I bought and ran a 100-acre farm with a cow-calf beef operation, started a seafood takeout restaurant at the same time, driving fifty miles each way daily for five years, from beer store to restaurant to farm and return. It was in the middle of this whirlwind activity that, through my daughter's prayers, God apprehended me and restored me to some semblance of sanity. My life took a 180-degree turn and, with my usual exuberance, brought me into full-time church and Christian television activity, culminating ultimately in my wife and me relocating from Ontario to British Columbia in order to reconnect with our children, who were by this time living there. This wonderful new chapter in our lives continued until the death of my beloved wife Margaret at eighty years of age and saw a totally unexpected birthing of poetry in me. This phenomenon has flowed unabated up to this day and, by God's grace, will continue to the end of my life. My poetry is quite varied and reflects, I suppose, all my life experiences, so please stay tuned; more should follow. Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1926, Depression years, I had stints in the R.C.A.F., Great Lakes Shipping, Canadian army. Finally, I spent twenty-seven years as a beer store manager. At fifty, I had a very intense spiritual experience and went to missionary school, Y.W.A.M., Hawaii. I became a Christian counsellor, was fifty-four years wed, then widowed. Finally, an unexpected explosion of poetry resulted in this collection.

* Commune. I guess you could call it a commune: some of us were unrelated; we bought, cooked, and ate food as a group; we'd sit on the floor around a low table wolfing down fried rice, scrambled eggs, calf brains, and lungs. The Draft. We all dealt with it one way or another. Some took cover in college throughout that period. Others enlisted for four years rather than serving the two-year minimum, sacrificing two years of their lives to gain control over how and where they spent their time during the war. Hitchhiking. People seldom hitch these days. But in the late sixties and early seventies, we shuffled along the roads with our thumbs out, ready for anything. In the world of hitching, it was axiomatic never to offend the driver. Otherwise, you might find yourself back on the shoulder of the road, or worse. Dropping Acid. I became concerned I'd have a bad trip so I went into the bathroom, locked the door, stared into the medicine cabinet mirror, and reassured myself-not aloud, but inside my head. I assessed the person I saw as if he and I were different entities. After several minutes, I felt better. Health. You know that clich "e;If you have your health, you have everything"e;? In 1980, mine crashed like a runaway elevator. The room spun violently, faster and faster. I went blind; my body tied up in knots and started to disappear.
