Singleplayerová kampaň navazuje na Brood War o čtyři roky později, figurují ty samé postavy: Zeratul, Jim Raynor a Kerrigan. Tři důvěrně známé rasy zůstanou přítomny, čili Protossové, Terrani a Zergové (poslední dvě nebudou disponovat ani obdobou mateřské lodi).
Na otázku, jak tu mohou být Terrani, když byli zničeni na konci Brood War, odpověděl zástupce Blizzardu, že se skládají z odvrácené říše Terran Dominion, a také naznačil, že v příběhu sehraje roli starodávná kosmická rasa Xel Naga. Terrany posílí šikovná jednotka zvaná Reapers, která dokáže překonat nerovný terén se svými jet packy - seskočit dolů i vyletět nahoru.
Tři hlavní rasy (čtvrtá rasa se tu nevyskytne) mají projít celkovou proměnou, být vzájemně ještě více odlišné (žádné ekvivalenty těch samých schopností od ostatních) a zároveň lépe vybalancované.
